Five former opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) politicians on Monday held their first press conference since receiving political rehabilitation, saying they remained true to opposition principles and demanded the release of their leader Kem Sokha. A lawyer for the opposition leader Kem Sokha, responded to statements made by Prime Minister Hun Sen alleging that Mr Sokha is discouraging banned CNRP officials from seeking a lift on their five-year ban from politics. Prime Minister Hun Sen has said Sam Rainsy, a leader of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, is responsible for divisions in the party amid a call for ex-CNRP politicians who were banned from politics to seek pardons and disavow their membership. Interior Minister Sar Kheng said the dissolution of the former opposition party was done as a result of their mass demonstrations after the 2013 national election.
The Ministry of Interior has informed recently rehabilitated former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) lawmaker Real Camerin that his request to form the “Khmer Empire” party had been rejected because the name represented a period in Cambodian history.
