On June 1, the US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman led a delegation
to Cambodia and in a meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen, she stressed the
US commitment to the Cambodian people while raising concern over human
rights and democracy in Cambodia. US ambassador met with Minister of
Interior Sar Kheng on June 7 to discuss a wide range of issues including
anti-human trafficking, child protection and the implementation of UN
resolutions in Cambodia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn on
June 6 led a senior delegation taking a special Cambodia Airways flight to
the ASEAN-China Special Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the 6th
Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting – both scheduled to be
held on June 7-8 in the western Chinese city of Chongqing. Another 500,000
doses of Covid-19 vaccines out of the 4.5 million total doses purchased from
China will arrive in Cambodia on June 8 to bolster vaccination efforts,
according senior Ministry of Health officials.

Three UN special rapporteurs regarding the establishment of the National

The U.S. embassy in Cambodia said that its defense attaché was denied
complete access during an invited visit to the country’s largest naval base
Ream.  “When it became clear he would not be granted adequate access,
Colonel Ferrara ended the tour and requested Cambodian military officials
reschedule the visit with full access at the earliest opportunity,” it said,
adding that regular visits to the base were an important for transparency
and mutual trust. Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Banh said redevelopment
plans for Ream Naval Base was being turned into a geopolitical issue – in a
thinly veiled reference to the United States – as the minister continues to
clarify Cambodia’s position on whether China will have a military presence
at the base.
