The formation of several parties by former officials of the court-dissolved
the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) before the upcoming elections
appears to be following an old scenario that happened two decades ago when
the party that won the previous election knew bitter defeat.
Cambodian opposition party activists injured in physical assaults during
the last year are living in fear, with their attackers still unidentified by
police and authorities sometimes blaming the victims themselves for the
attacks.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court today began the trial of a former CNRP
councillor in connection with a protest that took place last year, in front
of the municipal court, seeking for the release of the president of the
Cambodian Confederation of Unions and a member of the Cambodia Watchdog
Council from prison.
Sam Rainsy’s defence lawyer Choung Chou-Ngy said today that he has
requested for political rehabilitation though Interior Minister Sar Kheng on
June 24 but has yet to receive a response.
