Russia has confirmed that foreign minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) related meetings, which Cambodia will host in Phnom Penh from July 31 to August 6.

Human trafficking worsened in Cambodia and Vietnam over the past year, according to a report issued by the U.S. State Department, which placed them in its lowest ranking alongside 20 other countries including China, accused of widespread forced labor and mass incarceration in Xinjiang. The country’s top anti-trafficking official said Cambodia would investigate news reports of rampant human trafficking in the country, as a rights group noted how neither the government nor civil society were positioned to look at the emergent type of trafficking.

The bipartisan bill was introduced by US Senators Marco Rubio (Republican) and Edward J. Markey (Democrat). The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations passed the Cambodia Democracy and Human Rights Act on July 19. The proposed legislation is to sanction Cambodian officials. Senior Cambodian officials have condemned as unfair the passage by a US Senate committee of a bill.
