A string of recent defections and public apologies by opposition party officials and critics of Prime Minister Hun Sen has given the longtime leader a boost less than three months before July’s parliamentary elections. The former vice-president of Takeo Provincial Candlelight Party (CP) Ear Channa was released on bail after Prime Minister Hun Sen asked the Ministry of Justice to review the possibility with the court for his release. The former Khmer Win Party president Suong Sophorn was made Secretary of State at the Office of Council of Ministers after joining the ruling party.

The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has turned down the main opposition Candlelight Party (CP)’s request for talks to ease political tension ahead of July’s National Election, saying the ruling party has no interest in negotiating to solve legal cases of opposition senior officials.
