As the majority of the population opts to stay home during the pandemic, the domestic demand for energy has been running high. Data from the Mines and Energy Ministry stated as of last year, around 2.68 million households, or approximately 75 percent of the country’s households, are receiving electricity – all of which are expected to record an increase in energy use. Khmer Times interviewed UNDP representative Nick Beresford to find out how the COVID-19 movement restrictions have impacted the country’s energy demands.

More than 600 workers of the SEPIA garment factory in Phnom Penh’s Porsenchey district  staged a protest in front of the factory premises to demand their unpaid wages. About 1,600 workers of the FMF factory staged a protest  in front of the factory to demand last month’s missing wages in Kandal province’s Takhmao city.

The Cambodian “war on drugs” launched in 2017 has offered little help to addicts while adding to overcrowded prisons and ongoing human rights abuses, according to a newly released report from human rights group Amnesty International. The government criticised a report released by Amnesty International on their website yesterday. The report speaks about human rights violations committed over the government’s “war on drug” campaign. It has resulted in tens of thousands of people being arrested since it started in 2017.

A Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA) spokesman said Thursday that at least 137,158 debtors who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic had requested to either postpone loan repayments or restructure it.
