| The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened an emergency meeting to address the escalating armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on Asim Iftikhar, the rotating president of the United Nations Security Council, to convene an emergency meeting in response to what he describes as an armed incursion by Thai forces into Cambodian territory. Clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border have left at least 11 people reported dead, including Thai civilians and one soldier, as leaders from both countries condemned each other’s aggression and called on the international community to uphold international law. https://bit.ly/452u1ap; Thailand is recalling its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelling Cambodia’s envoy as an investigation into landmine explosions ratcheted up a long-running border dispute. https://bit.ly/4lMYKOl; Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN Chair, says Cambodia and Thailand are willing to consider a ceasefire as fighting between the two countries’ armies along the border area continued into the second day. |
