As she began an 11-day mission, UN human rights monitor for Cambodia Rhona Smith was told by civil society groups on Monday that the rights space in the Kingdom was still restricted.

The UN Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) Cambodia monitor Rhona Smith met with the government’s rights body  to discuss the situation in the Kingdom.

At a meeting with Minister of Justice Ang Vong Vathana on Thursday, UN human rights monitor for Cambodia Rhona Smith expressed her appreciation for the Kingdom’s achievements regarding legal assistance, said ministry spokesman Chin Malin. Justice Ministry spokesman Chin Malin said the municipal court has rejected a request by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights to meet with former opposition leader Kem Sokha.

In a move to augment the management of security in Cambodia, a network of surveillance cameras will be installed at 231 points along major boulevards in Preah Sihanouk province with help from the Chinese authorities and tech giant Huawei.

Over the past two decades, Cambodia has played an important role in fulfilling its obligations in accordance with its values, which do not favour a single political system, including the chairmanship of Asean Summit in 2002 and 2012. PRIME Minister Hun Sen on Monday hailed the positive impact on Cambodia joining Asean, saying the bloc was a source of peace, security and prosperity.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s state counsellor and de-facto head of state, arrived at Phnom Penh airport on Monday afternoon as she began a three-day visit to Cambodia.
