The UN Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia, Rhona Smith, is to land in the Kingdom on Monday, in her first official visit since questioning the “genuineness” of the July 29 national elections, polls she claimed were “one-sided”. The Australian government has confronted Cambodia over allegations of threats made against the Khmer diaspora and possible meddling in Australian affairs after Prime Minister Hun Sen returned his country to a one party state at elections in July. Australia’s controversial refugee resettlement deal with Cambodia has expired and is “no longer an option” for the immediate future, the country’s Senate has been told.

Determined to put words into action, after decades of rhetorical statements concerning Cambodia’s human-rights violations, the European Union (EU) is set to implement its 13-point resolution passed in September. Earlier this month, the European Union put Cambodia on notice that its preferred trade status is at risk. EU trade commissioner, Cecelia Malmstrom, announced that the EU is reviewing Cambodia's eligibility for this preference. With loss of its Everything But Arms (EBA) Cambodia would weaken its economic growth and lead to a credit negative , Moody's Investors Services has cautioned. With a B2/stable sovereign rating, it would undermine the price competitiveness of its garment exports unless they are offset by productivity gains.
