The U.S. Defence Department has asked Cambodia to explain why it suddenly turned down an offer to repair a naval base, saying the decision had raised speculation of possible plans for hosting China’s military. Ream Naval Base yesterday dismissed peculations by a senior US military officer that it will host Chinese military facilities in its base in Preah Sihanouk province.
Minister of National Defence Tea Banh said on Tuesday that he did not understand the response from the US after the Kingdom declined an offer to help repair the Ream Naval Base.

The European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia has proposed the creation of a Supreme Administrative Court and independent review mechanisms within government agencies so businesses can have the law applied more consistently.
Prime Minister Hun Sen today said that he will highlight progress on the Kingdom’s human rights at the Aid-for Trade Global Review 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland when he attends the meeting this week. He explained that “the forest had not been seen for the trees” when the human rights situation in Cambodia was assessed and that the Kingdom would not bow to preaching on the matter.
In a speech to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said those attempting to bring about regime change in Cambodia “at all costs” would never appreciate the Kingdom’s efforts at improving human rights.
