Spain's Carmen Moreno has been approved as the new EU ambassador to Cambodia, replacing the outgoing George Edgar, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesperson Ket Sophann.
China has signed a secret deal to gain exclusive rights to a Cambodian naval base, The Wall Street Journal reported . Australia has warned a Chinese base in Cambodia would upend peace and stability in the region, as the superpower moves to use debt-laden developing nations to expand its military footprint.
Prime Minister Hun Sen dismissed a Wall Street Journal report that Cambodia had signed a secret agreement allowing the Chinese military to use the Kingdom’s Ream Naval Base as “fabricated news”. Minister of National Defence Tea Banh also criticised sanctions imposed on Cambodia by “superpowers and organisations” as unjust and as a political trend against the Kingdom however he urged the Japanese government to continue supporting and funding the Kingdom by providing additional training and equipment to the armed forces.
The Chinese government dismissed a report by The Wall Street Journal alleging a secret agreement between China and Cambodia was reached to allow a Chinese military presence in Preah Sihanouk province. It said the report was “over-interpreted”. Sixty-one years ago, the Cambodian-Chinese cooperation treaty was signed by late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and then-Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, and both nations continued to strengthen ties and eventually established a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation’ in 2013.

Cambodia government requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to consider providing aid – especially to the elderly, people with disabilities and orphaned children.
