The European Union and United Nations abruptly rescheduled the launch of an anti-human trafficking program this week after being confronted with questions on the choice of venue: a Phnom Penh hotel owned by a Cambodian tycoon who has another property that has been used by human traffickers.
Satellite imagery indicates that two Chinese navy ships have been docked at Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base for over four months. There are also concern on a proposed Chinese-financed, 180-kilometer canal Funan Techo Canal could give Chinese military vessels access to interior Cambodia and the Cambodia-Vietnam border. Cambodia’s leader Hun Sen has said that his country would not negotiate with Vietnam over the planned Funan Techo canal, despite concerns about its environmental and geopolitical impacts.
