The Phnom Penh Municipal Court resumed the first of a series of trials involving 44 opposition party activists charged with plotting and incitement to cause social chaos in connection to the failed attempt by leading opposition figure Sam Rainsy to return to Cambodia from exile on November 9, 2019. The trials had been delayed for several months. An Interior Ministry employee, jailed for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government with the CNRP, pleaded his innocence and reaffirmed his “love” for the government, as a Phnom Penh court resumed a trial against opposition members.
