The Phnom Penh Appeal Court upheld the sentencing of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s cousin Tycoon Dy Proem, 59, and Seng Yean, 62, former deputy director-general of the Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relation and Inspection’s Inspection Department, who were convicted in absentia ten years ago on charges of bribery and proffering of bribes committed between 2008 and 2009.

A Phnom Penh court has convicted and sentenced seven former opposition activists in absentia for Facebook posts accusing Prime Minister Hun Sen of hiding Covid-19 deaths in 2020 and other posts about his time as a former Khmer Rouge district commander. Cambodian courts have tried hundreds of activists, former politicians and supporters linked to the CNRP on a raft of charges. The Ministry of Interior’s General Department of Prisons (GDP) plans to admit Rong Chhun, head of the Cambodia Watchdog Council (CWC), to hospital for surgery on his right eye. The transfer will occur when doctors summon him, according to GDP spokesman Nouth Savna.
