The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) aims to educate and spread awareness about “human rights and the law” in the capital and all 24 provinces. This initiative aims to ensure people have a proper understanding of their rights and can exercise them effectively.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced in absentia former opposition party leader Sam Rainsy and eight former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) politicians to imprisonment from six to eight years for plotting and inciting the people to overthrow the government, committed between July 19 and November 11 in 2021. Presiding Judge Le Sokha named the nine who were convicted as Rainsy, 74; Ho Vann, 76; Eng Chhay Eang, 58; Run Chanthy, 39; Rin Ratha, 36; Neang Sokhon, 36; Aun Pov, 36; Chim Sophath, 35; Bun Thav also known as Bun Thavrin, 40. Rainsy, Vann and Chhay Eang were sentenced to eight years in prison and a fine of 4 million riels each while Chanthy, Ratha, Sokhon, Pov, Sophath, and Thav were jailed for six years and also fined 4 million riels each.
The Phnom Penh Appeal Court upheld the conviction of former founder and president of the Cambodia National Heart Party (CNHP) and 12 other former steering committee members on fraud charges for allegedly using false documents and copying fingerprints to register the CNHP in 2021.
