The Labor and Health Ministries have started conducting health checkups in the capital and provinces to monitor the spread of the novel coronavirus. These workers had either applied for leave or skipped work during the canceled Khmer New Year holidays last week, stoking fears of the disease spreading through the provinces. The Ministry of Health on Saturday (April 25) reported that a further seven patients (total 117) who had been infected with the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have now recovered.

The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training has instructed enterprises, business owners and travel agencies in five provinces to prepare the proper forms for the suspension of employment contracts. This, it said, will make it easier for the ministry to transfer $40 a month to workers and employees via Wing (Cambodia) Limited Specialized Bank. In its latest measure to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has ordered all factory owners in Phnom Penh and the provinces to make a list of employees who took leave and returned to work despite the ban on travel between provinces and Khmer New Year holidays being postponed.

The Ministry of Interior said that the 85,000 or so Cambodian migrant workers who have returned to Cambodia due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic must not attempt to go back to the countries where they used to work. Minister of Interior Sar Kheng said that the ministry is prohibiting these Cambodian workers to go back to these countries, and this, for their own safety.  While the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) has reported that 77 new factories opened in Cambodia in the first three months of 2020, employing a total of 27,909 workers.

A draft development policy for Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) and a new SME definition has been sent to the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s Economic and Financial Policy Committee (EFPC) for review and approval, according to a senior official.
