Although Prime Minister Hun Sen has stated that he will be the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) candidate for the top office for at least another decade, his recent endorsement of his oldest son Hun Manet as his successor may indicate some flexibility on his part as to when he decides to retire given his age. The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)’s Standing Committee of the Central Committee, has expressed strong support for the move, considering him qualified to hold the top position in the future. For the future of the nation, Prime Minister Hun Sen is already lining up young people into the Cambodian People’s Party body politic to take over ministerial positions to replace senior stalwarts aged over 60. Interior Minister Sar Kheng, the lone deputy prime minister who was holding back from publicly endorsing Hun Manet to lead the country. Nine of 10 deputy prime ministers have issued statements of support for Hun Manet, the prime minister’s eldest son now backed by his father to be next in power.

The government said that Kem Sokha, former president of the court-dissolved CNRP, remains banned from politics until the Phnom Penh Municipal Court issues a new warrant or verdict with regard to his case. However, to strengthen diplomatic ties with foreign countries, visits conducted by ambassadors are sometimes allowed.

Amid a legal dispute over the Interior Ministry’s rejection of the validation for opposition Cambodia National Heart Party (CNHP), Supreme Court president Dith Munty has set the trial date to decide whether to allow CNHP to register to operate for the upcoming elections. The Supreme Court has issued a summons for the founder of the National Heart Party (NHP), Siem Phluk, ordering that he appear with legal counsel at a hearing on December 24 to resolve a complaint he filed against the Ministry of Interior for refusing to register his party.
