The opposition Candlelight Party is calling this Sunday’s commune council election the “worst ever,” alleging they were beset by voter suppression and intimidation, as the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) looks set to win by a landslide. The Candlelight Party issued on June 6 a statement to express its regrets over the preliminary results of the Commune election, stating they “don’t reflect the will of the Cambodian people.”

Five opposition parties will meet in July to form a joint advocacy group and demand a revamp of the National Election Commission (NEC). They will also seek legal action against officials who intimidated voters during the recently held June 5 Commune Elections.
