With parliamentary elections scheduled for July 23, the Candlelight Party (CP), one of the largest opposition parties, has finally applied to register itself and its candidates with the National Election Committee (NEC).

Candlelight Party leader Rong Chhun is rejected by the NEC run as a candidate from Kandal province in the July election. The NEC refers to the Justice Ministry had determined that the unionist was not legally rehabilitated from his 2021 incitement conviction. The CP has decided to nominate Chan Cheng, a former CNRP lawmaker, as CP’s parliamentary candidate for Kandal province, replacing Rong Chhun.

As the National Election approaches the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has accepted a series of key opposition figures and activists defections to secure a landslide victory.
