An end to the trial and the restoration of his political rights are what Kem Sokha is hoping to achieve, according to his lawyer Pheng Heng, who on Feb. 16 suggested that Sokha has been hoping to compete in the upcoming commune elections slated for June 5, 2022. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court will consider adding more trial days for the hearing in the treason case against former opposition leader Kem Sokha following a request by his lawyer.

In an effort to secure the victory for the June Commune Election, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) is set to register 28,257 candidates in 1,652 communes across the country while some former commune councillors of the court- dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) who defected to the CPP have lost their chance to stand for election.
