Following the brutal slaying of 31-year-old Sin Khon, an activist for the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) in the early hours of Nov. 21, family and friends of Khon have called on the authorities to ensure a thorough and independent investigation is carried out. Phnom Penh Gendarmerie arrested a man on Nov. 22 in connection to the murder of Sin Khon, a former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) activist who was brutally hacked to death in the early hours of Nov. 21. Family and friends of murdered student Sin Khon have said that they believe the young opposition activist was targeted in a political assassination, rejecting public statements by police that Khon was killed after getting into an argument with a motorcycle repairmen and his brother while drunk.

The recent deportations of three members of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) from Thailand to Cambodia has been criticized by a number of civil society groups for blatantly violating their rights as refugees recognised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The deportations have caused widespread concern among other activists who have sought political asylum in Thailand.

As the commune elections approach, the effort to “unite democrats” to challenge the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) had made little progress, raising concerns that the opposition parties are not ready, or not capable of merging before the elections. Chanrath, CRP vice-president, said yesterday that the negotiation to a “united opposition” is ongoing but there is no sign of them uniting under a one flag yet, saying each party is busy preparing for the upcoming commune elections.
