Opposition political groups appear to be adopting a casual attitude over Prime Minister Hun Sen’s move to hand over power to his son General Hun Manet.

With the initial election results confirming the ruling party’s sweeping victory, securing 120 out of the 125 parliament seats,  The royalist Funcinpec Party made an unexpected comeback after winning five seats at the National Assembly in the July 23 national elections.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, one of the world's longest-serving leaders, said  (Jul 26) he will resign and hand power to his eldest son after almost four decades of hardline rule. Hun Manet, who is slated to succeed Prime Minister Hun Sen after an upcoming vote of confidence at the National Assembly, has vowed to fulfil his father’s wish in the safeguarding of Cambodia’s hard-won peace and development.
