The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has set out a political strategy to secure victories in upcoming elections by nominating its president Hun Sen as “Prime Minister Candidate” for the 2023 National Election. He announced that when he eventually steps down, there will be an upper age limit on Cambodian prime ministers, although that age limit has not yet been set and Hun Sen has said he will remain in power until he chooses to step aside, despite upcoming elections.

The opposition Cambodia National Heart Party (CNHP)’s efforts to participate in the upcoming elections has come to an end after the Supreme Court rejected the party appeal against the Ministry of Interior’s decision not to validate it over fraudulent thumbprints.

After nearly two months of a legal battle, the current royalist Funcinpec leadership has won an ongoing legal battle against a rival faction led by party vice-president Chap Nhalyvoud after the Phnom Penh Municipal Court considered his group’s lawsuit over alleged abuse of power is “baseless”. Funcinpec vice-president over internal conflict, the veteran politician Por Bun Sreu has returned to back the party to back “acting president” Prince Norodom Chakravuth as the new leader amid fight for the presidency after the death of Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
