Washington reiterated its support of Kem Sokha as Cambodia’s opposition
leader during a visit by a top-ranking diplomat to Phnom Penh, expressing
hope that Phnom Penh will pursue a politically “softer stance” that could
see his banned party join upcoming elections.
The government and the Cambodian People’s Party reacted to the United
States’ call to promptly drop the “politically motivated” charges against
members of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, with the CPP
saying there are “no political prisoners” in Cambodia.
